Collection: Paul Zepeda
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Paul Zepeda began creating and exhibiting in solo and group shows as a self taught artist across the country from the age of 15. He went on to obtain a degree in Studio Art from the University of New Mexico, and his oil paintings, etchings and sculptures reflect the wide range of influence and experiences that inspire him. Using materials such as gold leaf as well as chemical processes such as oxidation, his works often have the look of something ancient created in a modern style. The connections and interactions between people and their environment, society and culture are central themes in his work, and color, line, symbols and texture are employed in an attempt to connect with the viewer on a level that borders on the spiritual. “Art can tear us from the complexities of the modern digital age and re-connect us to the relationships that make us human. A single piece can act as a beacon of memory and hope in what may be an otherwise dreary world.”
His abilities have been tapped for live events such as the annual Broadway Bares performances at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas as well as for film and television, including the award-winning series Breaking Bad, and his paintings have been sold at auction to benefit numerous charities around the globe including the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, the Anti-Defamation League, the V Foundation and the American Cancer Society. Recent exhibitions in contemporary galleries and museums include 100 oxidized works with gold leaf for Gutai: Splendid Playground at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC as well as the current display of the 7 foot tall Pakal sculpture “Future Antiquity” at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya in Mexico, and his work in the studio and global outreach have been featured by numerous media outlets including BBC World News, CNN Mexico, Max’s Kansas City and the New York Post.
The artist lives and works in New York City and on location around theglobe.
